Emir of Kuwait appoints Sabah al-Khalid al-Sabah as new Crown Prince
The appointment of the Crown Prince in Kuwait comes three weeks after the Emir's decision to dissolve the National Assembly and suspend the operation of certain constitutional articles for four years.
The Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshaal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, has issued a royal decree nominating Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah as Crown Prince, approximately six months after taking office.
The official Kuwaiti news agency, KUNA, reported that the decree instructs the Prime Minister to present this order to the Cabinet for appropriate constitutional measures, taking immediate effect upon issuance.
This appointment follows the Emir's decision to dissolve the National Assembly and suspend certain constitutional provisions for four years, after a political crisis hindered the formation of a new government following the April 4 parliamentary elections.
Sheikh Sabah al-Khaled, 71, previously served as Prime Minister from 2019 to 2022 under the late Emirs Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah and Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah. He also held the position of Foreign Minister from 2011 to 2019. A new government was formed in Kuwait in mid-May, the first under the current Emir.
