EU has spent 130 bln euro to support Ukraine: von der Leyen
The head of the European Commission reveals that European countries have supplied Kiev with 47% of all weapons, and the United States contributed 40% only.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen informed reporters after the European Council meeting in Brussels that the European Union has already invested over 130 billion euros to support Ukraine.
"Looking back, Europe has so far provided Ukraine with almost 130 billion euros," she said.
According to von der Leyen, the European Union has supplied more weapons to Ukraine than the United States. She stated that the EU is responsible for 47% of the weapons sent to Ukraine, while the United States has contributed around 40%.
On December 18, in a speech before the EU parliament, von der Leyen said "Putin is trying harder than ever, with new weapons, new troops from North Korea, a new wave of attacks on energy infrastructure, and his strategy is very clear. He is trying to make gains on the ground and to terrorize the people of Ukraine," stressing that bolstering Ukraine is not only a "moral imperative, but it is also a strategic imperative".
Further in her statement, she stated that with G7 partners and international financial institutions, the European Union is set to contribute 13 billion euros next year for Ukraine.
Additionally, "as of January, we will start transferring our part of the G7 loan, financed by the revenues of immobilized Russian assets."
