EU held crisis talks in Gabon, no evacuation plan: The Financial Times
The meeting was held on Wednesday, says the FT, which adds that no information has been provided by Brussels regarding the evacuation of EU citizens from Gabon.
Citing unidentified officials, the Financial Times reported on Thursday that crisis talks have been conducted by EU diplomats in the capital of Gabon, Libreville.
This comes after the military seized power following ousted President Ali Bongo Ondimba's re-election who issued a video requesting assistance from the West.
The meeting was held on Wednesday, according to the FT, which added that no information has been provided by Brussels regarding the evacuation of EU citizens from Gabon.
The Peace and Security Council of the African Union is also scheduled to convene on Thursday to deliberate on the situation in Gabon after the military takeover of the Central African nation.
Bongo was re-elected for a third term, after which the Gabonese military delivered a televised address, declaring the election results annulled and all governmental institutions dissolved.
On Wednesday, General Brice Oligui Nguema was unanimously appointed as president for the transitional period in Gabon.
This also comes a day after Nguema was asked by Le Monde in an interview, "Do you consider yourself the new Gabonese head of state?"
Nguema said, "I do not declare myself yet, I do not envisage anything for the moment. This is a debate that we are going to have with all the generals. We will meet at 2 pm (3 pm Paris time). It will be about reaching a consensus. Everyone will put forward ideas and the best ones will be chosen, as well as the name of the person who will lead the transition."
