Following the EU's renewal of sanctions against Syria, Damascus demands that the countries that imposed sanctions against it be held accountable.

Syria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs considered Friday that the European Union insists on repeating lies that are disconnected from reality about the situation in Syria, reported SANA.

An official source at the Syrian Ministry pointed out in a statement that the EU ignores the positive developments that Syria has witnessed.

According to the diplomatic source, these developments include fighting terrorism, consolidating stability, expanding national reconciliations, and settling the legal status of many citizens through amnesty decrees.

The source considered that the EU remains blindly dependent on US decisions and is fully involved in the aggression against Syria.

The statement also stressed that the EU and the US bear full responsibility for the suffering of the Syrian people as a result of the unilateral coercive sanctions against Syria - in a flagrant violation of the most basic human rights and principles of international law.

Syria stresses the need to hold countries - that imposed sanctions against it and stole its resources - accountable and oblige them to pay compensation to the Syrian people.

The official source underlined that Syria, whose army and people confronted terrorists, will not be deterred by the EU's miserable positions and will manage to overcome the repercussions of the aggression on Syria and rebuild what was destroyed by terrorism.

It is noteworthy that the EU has decided to extend the sanctions imposed on Syria since 2011 for an additional year, until June 1, 2023.

The EU sanctions target Syrian entities and individuals and include a ban on importing oil, restricting investments, freezing the assets of the Central Bank of Syria in the EU, and restricting the export of equipment and technology.
