Former Ghana president returns to power after historic election win
Former President John Dramani Mahama triumphs in Ghana's presidential election, marking a historic comeback by defeating the ruling NPP amid economic dissatisfaction.
Ghana’s former President, John Dramani Mahama, has secured a historic comeback victory, defeating the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) amid widespread frustration over economic hardship.
NPP candidate and Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia conceded defeat after Saturday's election, which marked the end of the party's eight-year rule under President Nana Akufo-Addo, characterized by severe economic turmoil, high inflation, and debt default.
This win marks Mahama’s return to power after serving as president from 2012 to 2017 and unsuccessful bids in 2016 and 2020.
"The people of Ghana have spoken, the people have voted for change at this time and we respect it with all humility," Bawumia said in a press conference flanked by party officials.
NDC spokesperson Sammy Gyamfi earlier stated that internal reviews showed John Mahama winning 56.3% of the vote, compared to 41.3% for NPP’s Mahamudu Bawumia. Party agents observed and tallied votes at polling stations before the election commission began official collation, with official results expected by Tuesday.
Ghana, known for its democratic stability, has seen power alternate between the NPP and NDC since returning to multiparty politics in 1992.
