Former Haitian senator arrested over president's murder
Half a year after the assassination of former Haitian President Jovenel Moise, another suspect was apprehended over his assassination, this time a former lawmaker.
A former Haitian lawmaker suspected to be involved in the assassination of his country's president has been arrested in Jamaica, a police source revealed Saturday.
Former Senator John Joel Joseph is wanted in connection with the July 7 assassination of former President Jovenel Moise, and he was arrested Friday night in Jamaica, according to the source, not specifying the exact location.
Moise had been assassinated in his private residence on July 7, 2021, when "a group of unidentified individuals attacked the private residence of Moise overnight on Wednesday and shot him dead," the Prime Minister announced at the time of the killing.
"He's being detained at the moment," the source reportedly said about the ex-lawmaker.
The Haitian authorities had apprehended a Haitian businessman and convicted drug trafficker, Rodolphe Jaar, in the Dominican Republic over suspected ties to the assassination of the former president.
He had spent months in hiding after sneaking into the Dominican Republic from Haiti.
Haiti PM survives assassination attempt
In early January, gunmen carried out an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry during an event celebrating the Caribbean country’s 218th independence anniversary.
The reported assassination attempt increased concerns over the safety of officials in Haiti since the assassination of Haiti President Jovenel Moise.
