Ferrara earned the nickname "jailbreak king" after his dramatic escape from the high-security Fresnes prison near Paris in 2003, where his accomplices blew up a gate and fired on guards with AK-47s.
At the time, he was serving a sentence for bank robberies, a prior escape in 1998, and other offenses. Ferrara received a 17-year prison sentence for his 2003 jailbreak in 2008.
According to French newspapers Le Figaro and Le Monde, he was released in 2022 after serving the majority of that sentence.
