Funeral route, Iran's early election procedures roadmap unveiled
Iran's elections are scheduled to be held on June 28 to appoint a new president for the country on July 8.
The final farewell ceremony for late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his companions will be held in South Khorasan Province early Thursday.
This comes after the Iranian people bid farewell to the bodies of Sayyed Ebrahim Raisi, his Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and their companions, in attendance of foreign officials and crowds of Iranian people who headed en masse to take part in the funeral services earlier today in Tehran.
As the last part of the funeral ceremony, President Raisi will be buried in the Imam Reza shrine in his hometown Mashhad, while Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian will be buried in Rey City in Tehran, inside the Shah Abdol Azim shrine.
After the ceremony, the process for early presidential elections is set to swiftly start over the ensuing fifty days. It is worth noting that Article 131 of the Iranian Constitution states that in the case of the passing of the President of the Republic, the first vice president assumes the authority and duties of the president with the approval of the leader of the Revolution and the Islamic Republic of Iran for a maximum period of 50 days.
On August 6, 2021, President Ebrahim Raisi appointed Mohammad Mokhber, born in 1955, as his deputy in Khuzestan Province.
Initial roadmap to early election procedures
The heads of the three powers in Iran have agreed Monday to hold presidential elections in the country on June 28, following the initial agreement that took place between Iran's Guardian Council and the Elections Commission.
It was decided during the initial agreement that elections would be held on June 28 to appoint a new president for the country on July 8.
According to the approved electoral calendar, candidates will be registered during the period from May 21 to June 3. Then, the Constitutional Council will study the eligibility of candidates between June 4 and June 10.
Then, on June 11, the Ministry of Interior will announce the approved candidates and the electoral campaigns will continue afterward until June 26.
On June 28, the presidential elections will be held, but the tentative schedule may change, taking into account that the 50-day deadline will end in the first week of July.

Finally, if no candidate wins a majority of votes on June 28, a runoff will be held on July 5.
It should be noted that while Raisi's term was set to expire in August 2025, the candidate who wins the next presidential election will serve a full term of four years.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi alongside Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and accompanying officials passed away Sunday in the tragic helicopter crash in Iran's East Azerbaijan Province.
