Greece’s parliament has elected former speaker Kostas [Konstantinos] Tasoulas, who is supported by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as the new president after the fourth round of voting.
The first three rounds, held on January 25, 31, and February 6, ended without a decision.
In the initial two rounds, candidates need two-thirds of the votes (200 out of 300), while 180 votes are required in the third round (Tasoulas only received 160 votes in each of the first three rounds).
In the fourth round, candidates need to obtain a majority of 151 votes.
The ruling New Democracy party, which nominated Tasoulas, currently holds 156 seats in parliament.
Earlier today, the Greek Parliament gathered for a fourth round of presidential elections, as the term of the current president Katerina Sakellaropoulou is set to expire on March 13th.
