Haiti's opposition leader calls on masses to oust PM Ariel Henry
The opposition leader is calling for blocking all governmental apparatuses nationwide.
A call for protest was made by ex-senator and leader of the Haitian opposition Pitit Desalin, Moise Jean Charles, to oust the current government led by Ariel Henry, Haitian media reported.
The Haiti Libre online newspaper pinpointed that Moise called for blocking all governmental apparatuses nationwide.
With this step, the opposition eyes paralyzing Haiti starting from January 29 for at least five consecutive days, according to the report.
No trust in US-backed Ariel Henry
The opposition has explicitly showcased mistrust in the current Prime Minister Ariel Henry. He was named PM by then-president Jovenel Moïse but was never officially sworn in. Later on, Henry was backed by foreign powers, alongside the Organization of American States and the United Nations, and was imposed as acting PM. Still, he lacked any political legitimation and remained unpopular.
The Montana Accord opposition group, a broad part of Haiti’s civil society, opposed the legitimacy of Henry’s government and has been demanding elections since 2022.
It is said that Henry may have had a finger in Moïse’s killing, while Haiti's chief prosecutor stated that he had contacted one of the chief suspects in the days before and hours after the assassination. The Justice Minister was requested to charge Henry formally.
Haiti has since seen a political and social crisis and has been riddled with crime. The humanitarian situation has also been subject to dire conditions rising from a series of consecutive natural disasters.
