Iran, Iraq affirm solidarity with Syria, necessity of regional peace
Iran and Iraq have both expressed serious concerns regarding the consequences of the armed groups' resurgence in Syria, resuming efforts to maintain regional stability.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani held a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Baghdad, Iraq, to discuss the latest regional developments.
The Prime Minister's media office issued a statement citing al-Sudani as confirming Iraq's support of Syria's unity, security, and stability, as well as necessitating respect for Syria's sovereignty.
Emphasizing the direct effect of the conflict in Syria on Iraq's security, al-Sudani reiterated Iraq's continued dedication to diplomatic initiatives to manage the crisis. "The events in Syria are closely linked to those unfolding in Gaza and Lebanon, all of which have jeopardized the security and stability of the region," the Iraqi top official stated.
"Iraq is continuing intensive diplomatic efforts to contain the crisis in Syria due to its clear impact on Iraqi security," he added.
Iran also echoed al-Sudani's statements, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasizing that the crisis in Syria and the resurgence of armed groups jeopardizes the stability of the entire region.
Speaking to reporters, Araghchi stressed the importance of discussions, which would consequently shape the initiatives to contain the crisis.
Iraq, Iran seek regional peace, stability
Araghchi and his delegation also met with Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid, who in turn emphasized the "need to intensify efforts and joint coordination to achieve security and stability in the region and to preserve Syria's unity, sovereignty, and the safety of its people."
Rashid reaffirmed Iraq's support for strengthening stability in the region and its efforts to prevent the expansion of the conflict, further stressing the importance of resuming consultations and coordination to maintain peace at both the regional and international levels, as well as developing a thorough plan to prevent the consequences of the rapidly unfolding events in the region.
Rashid pointed out that the developments in Syria and their impact on the region as a whole are of great concern, highlighting Iraq's consistent role in promoting international peace and security.
For his part, Araghchi praised Iraq's efforts to end conflicts and ease tensions, which serve the people of the region and contribute to its political, security, and economic stability.
Iran's state news agency IRNA reported that both Iran and Iraq express significant concern over the situation in Syria, viewing the resurgence of armed groups there as part of a larger plan that serves the interests of the United States and "Israel", with both nations arguing that the consequences will not be limited to Syria but will extend to neighboring nations, exacerbating regional instability.
Iraq, Iran, and Syria's FMs meet in Baghdad
Al Mayadeen's sources reported that a tripartite meeting of the foreign ministers of Iraq, Iran, and Syria was scheduled to take place in Baghdad on Friday, coinciding with the anticipated visit of Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to Baghdad on the same day.
The meeting comes in response to the escalating developments in Syria.
In this context, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein expressed deep concerns to his Syrian counterpart, Bassam al-Sabbagh, regarding the situation in Syria.
Both diplomats emphasized the importance of resuming consultations and coordination between their respective nations to avoid the recurrence of prior experiences, as well as exerting efforts to preserve regional security.
Sabbagh, on his part, stressed "the necessity of mobilizing Arab and regional efforts to counter this terrorist threat... and prevent it from moving to other countries."
