Iran has sharply denounced an accusation levied by the Group of Seven advanced nations' finance chiefs, urging them to halt their role in unlawful US sanctions rather than making "baseless" claims against Tehran.

In a statement issued on May 13, the G7 finance ministers and central bank governors expressed worry over "illicit financing risk emanating from Iran."

“We strongly condemn that part of the G7 finance ministers’ statement that makes a completely baseless and delusional accusation against the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said.

Kanaani demanded that the tiny number of nations "that are trying to impose their wishes" on others "stop their deplorable practice of accompanying and appeasing the illegal US sanctions against the great Iranian nation, which violate the fundamental principles of international law and human rights."

The spokesperson went on to say that the G7 members should be held accountable for severe violations of international law, rather than condoning and being complicit in "unilateral and unfair positions" against the Iranian people.

Former President Donald Trump imposed illegal sanctions on Iran after unilaterally exiting the 2015 nuclear deal in May 2018, despite Iran's complete compliance with the agreement's provisions.

Although Trump's so-called "maximum pressure" campaign failed to achieve his stated aims, the waves of sanctions have taken a tremendous toll on regular Iranians.

Last month, Iran criticized the G7 alliance for spreading allegations against the country's nuclear program and activities in the region as it suggested the group take a more realistic approach in its dealings, one that entails mutual respect.

It illustrated the accusations as “baseless and interventionist”, calling it the West’s way of enforcing its will on independent countries.
