Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on Wednesday that Iran is interested in resuming full-scale negotiations concerning its nuclear program.
"Iran is interested in this. All these months since January of this year, when the West began seriously 'playing' for the reintroducing of sanctions, although there is no legal right to do so, Iran has consistently advocated negotiations, shown flexibility and creativity in its approaches, and sought not to succumb to provocations," the Russian Foreign Minister said during an interview for Bridges to the East project.
Lavrov stated that the West is doing everything it can to avoid negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program that include the United States, and he added that the West's attempts to bring back sanctions against Iran are outrageous.
Trump Gaza proposal best current option
On the prospect of a ceasefire in Gaza, Lavrov stated that the current best option is US President Donald Trump's settlement plan because of its acceptability to Arab countries and because "Israel" has not rejected it.
"US President Donald Trump has proposed his '20 points,' which mention the word 'statehood.' But all this is formulated quite generally. In this context, we are talking only about what remains of the Gaza Strip," Russian FM Lavrov noted.
He emphasized that there is no mention of the West Bank in Trump's plan, noting that Russia considers the current US proposal is the best option available. "At least, the best from the point of view of acceptability for Arab states, 'non-rejection' by Israel, and that is how I would characterize the position of [Israeli Prime Minister] Benjamin Netanyahu," he emphasized.
He stated that the "collective punishment" of the entire Palestinian people for Al-Aqsa Flood by the Palestinian movement Hamas is a gross violation of international humanitarian law.
Lavrov expresses Russia's readiness to help Syria
In the same interview, Russian FM Lavrov stated that Russia will help its Syrian partners in all directions and that Moscow is ready to cooperate with other countries that have interests in Syria.
From all points of view, we will help our Syrian partners. We are ready to cooperate in these matters with other countries that promote their interests in the Syrian Arab Republic in one way or another," Lavrov stated.
He added that "Of particular importance will be the participation of the head of the Transitional Government, Mr. Ahmed Al-Sharaa, in the First Russian-Arab Summit on October 15. I think a serious conversation will take place there."
The minister added that if the "games" with Kurds for autonomy in Syria result in something concrete, then the Kurdish problem can explode in other countries.
"The unity of Syria is something that all countries that have some kind of influence on the situation should be interested in – on Damascus, on various ethno-confessional and political groups in other parts of the country," Lavrov stated.
"The traditional fear of many is that the Kurdish problem will 'explode', because if these 'games of autonomy, separatism' with the Syrian Kurds result in something concrete, then the Kurdish problem may explode in all other countries of the region. These are serious risks," he explained.
