The diplomatic ties between the countries have been cut off in the last 7 years, making this their first official meeting since.
Hossein Amir-Abdollahian arrived in Baku on Tuesday evening to attend the two-day Ministerial Meeting of the NAM Coordinating Bureau and met with several of his counterparts.
The Iranian Foreign Minister confirmed the meeting and expressed that they "discussed the imminent resumption of diplomatic relations between Sudan and Iran."
Furthermore, Amir-Abdollahian said he was informed about the latest situation of internal developments in Sudan, underscoring the need for a political solution and avoidance of war.
Sudan severed diplomatic relations with Iran on January 4, 2016, following Saudi Arabia's move, after Iranian demonstrators stormed its diplomatic station in Iran, incensed by the Saudi government's execution of famous Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir Al-Nimr.
In March, after seven years of strained ties, Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to restore diplomatic relations and reopen missions in respective countries after a series of talks brokered in Beijing, China, under the auspices of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
