Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday called on BRICS members to establish a collective mechanism to resist unilateral sanctions, describing them as illegal tools of political pressure.
“BRICS could develop a common mechanism to support its members in the face of illegal unilateral sanctions and to continue developing their economies without being subjected to unfair political pressure,” Pezeshkian said, according to the presidential press service.
The remarks came during an online BRICS summit that lasted about an hour and a half. The discussions focused on strengthening multilateralism, reforming international institutions, and building a fairer global order.
According to the press service of the Brazilian president, BRICS leaders reaffirmed their commitment to multilateral cooperation and reached consensus on the need to move toward a more equitable international system. The summit participants also exchanged views on procedures to counter unilateral trade measures.
Pezeshkian’s appeal reflects Iran’s long-standing opposition to US-led sanctions and its efforts to strengthen ties with emerging economies within the BRICS bloc.
Russia says sanctions not to stop shift toward multipolarity
Russia signaled its intention to strengthen ties with BRICS nations and other partners in the Global South in response to what it described as unlawful pressure from the United States. Speaking on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow remains committed to resisting unilateral and coercive measures by Washington.
Zakharova asserted that the trajectory of global politics cannot be reversed by tariffs or punitive measures. "We have a vast network of partners, like-minded people, and allies within the Global South, particularly among BRICS countries, who share this perspective. We are ready to step up cooperation with them in order to counteract illegal unilateral sanctions and to establish a truly multilateral, just, and equitable global order," she said.
The spokeswoman condemned US foreign policy, arguing that sanctions serve as a tool of interference and a violation of national sovereignty. She framed Washington’s approach as part of a broader struggle to maintain global dominance in a shifting world order.
