Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has expressed condolences to Syrian President Bashar Assad and implied that "Israel" is responsible for the recent fatal strike on a military academy in Homs, Iranian media reported on Friday.

In his letter of sympathy to the Syrian President, Mehr News quoted the Iranian President accusing the Zionist regime of "creating opportunities for terrorist groups like Islamic State to carry out attacks in Syria among foreign powers supplying them with intelligence, security, and logistical support."

Raisi urged the United Nations Security Council and other international agencies to take action in response to the tragedy.

The Commander of the Islamic Revolution's Guards Corps in Iran, Major General Hossein Salami, said that those involved in the Homs crime and its supporters “will pay a heavy price and will receive a major and shocking response.”

"The international community expects international institutions to act in accordance with their responsibilities and take a stance against the occupiers of Syrian lands and those who destabilize their security," Salami added

On another note, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani sent a message of condolence to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad mourning the victims of the terrorist attack in Homs.

A security source told Sputnik on Friday that several drones have been intercepted by the Syrian air defense systems over the city of Homs.

"The sounds of explosions that were heard in Homs occurred due to air defense repelling attacks by several drones in the sky above the city," the source stated.

This follows the same day that Al Mayadeen's correspondent to Syria reported that the funeral processions of the Homs military academy martyrs have commenced at the military hospital in Homs.

The funeral procession of the 28 martyrs was also reportedly attended by the Syrian Minister of Defense Ali Abbas.

The Syrian Arab Army decried the "cowardly... unprecedented" attack and underlined that they would "respond fiercely to all terrorist organizations wherever they are," pledging to hold the perpetrators and the masterminds behind the attack accountable.
