Kuwaiti government submits resignation after parliamentary elections
This comes after the opposition candidates scored considerable gains in the parliamentary election that took place on Thursday.
The Kuwaiti government submitted Saturday its resignation to the Emir of the country Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Kuwaiti news agency KUNA reported.
The announcement was made by the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Oil, Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and the Acting Minister of State for National Assembly Affairs, Mohammad Al-Fares, following an extraordinary cabinet session.
In a statement, Al-Fares indicated that following the special session chaired by the Prime Minister, the cabinet submitted its resignation to the Emir after the declaration of the parliamentary election's results, in line with Kuwait's constitution.
KUNA cited Al-Fares as saying that "the ministers adopted a draft decree calling on the National Assembly to hold the first regular session of the 17th legislative term on October 11."
Opposition candidates scored considerable gains
Opposition candidates scored considerable gains in the parliamentary election that took place on Thursday and saw 305 candidates, including 22 women.
The election was organized after the country's Crown Prince Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah dissolved the previous parliament in an attempt to end a political standoff between the government and the legislature.
According to official results, the 50 elected representatives included two women.
Reuters highlighted that "the deadlock with the cabinet has delayed the approval of a state budget for the fiscal year 2022/2023 and other economic reforms."
"The budget, which has to be voted on before November, had set spending at 23.65 billion dinars ($77.2 billion) compared with 23.48 billion for the 2021/2022 budget," Reuters noted.
