The Lebanese Armed Forces announced Monday the arrest of a five-member terror cell composed of Lebanese and Arab nationals, according to a statement issued by the Army’s Directorate of Orientation.
The suspects have been referred to the competent judiciary following a series of coordinated security operations carried out by Military Intelligence.
The arrests follow an earlier announcement by the army last week, in which three Lebanese citizens were detained for forming a cell supporting the so-called "Islamic State" (ISIS). The operations are part of the army’s ongoing counter-terrorism efforts aimed at monitoring and dismantling extremist networks across the country.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the cell had been receiving directives from ISIS leaders based outside Lebanon and was preparing to carry out attacks targeting the Lebanese army.
The Army stressed that its intelligence units remain vigilant and will continue efforts to preempt and neutralize terror threats before they can materialize.
