Lebanese Army Comments on Footage of Soldier Shooting Protestors in Tayouneh
The Lebanese army command issues a statement in response to footage of a Lebanese soldier shooting at protestors in Tayouneh.
The Lebanese army command issued a statement Saturday in response to a circulating social media video showing a Lebanese army soldier shooting at protestors in Tayouneh on October 14 during their peaceful demonstration against the politicization of the Beirut Blast probe.
"Videos are circulating on social media, showing a soldier shooting towards protestors during the confrontations that took place in Tayouneh two days ago. The army deems it necessary to clarify that the soldier who opened fire is under investigation with judiciary supervision," read the statement.
Social media users have been circulating CCTV footage of a Lebanese soldier opening fire at demonstrators on Thursday. The demonstrators were part of the Tayouneh peaceful demonstration, which was later ambushed, leading to the martyrdom of several citizens and injury of several others.
The Lebanese people mourned several martyrs on Friday, who passed after being shot by snipers nesting on rooftops. The snipers shot innocent and unarmed demonstrators who were protesting against the politicization of the Beirut blast probe.
A source in the Lebanese army reported that the security services arrested 19 people. Some of those arrested admitted to being involved in planning for the ambush beforehand. Hezbollah and the Amal Movement are blaming the Lebanese Forces party for the ambush, which brought Lebanon to the brink of civil war.
