Libya, "Israel" 'Seriously' Considering Diplomatic Relations
Israeli newspaper Maariv reveals information about calls that took place on the sidelines of the Paris conference on Libya to establish diplomatic ties between the latter and "Israel".
The Israeli Maariv newspaper revealed details about calls that took place on the sidelines of the Friday Libya Conference in France. According to the Israeli newspaper, there had been discussions on establishing diplomatic ties between "Tel Aviv" and Tripoli.
France hosted the conference with the attendance of President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and US Vice President Kamala Harris.
Libya was represented by Chairman of the High Council of State Khalid al-Mishri and Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibeh.
"The invitation of Israel, Greece, and Cyrus, which as Mediterranean countries have a direct interest in what is happening in Libya, was also considered; however, it was decided not to invite them in the end," the newspaper claimed.
Maariv also asserted that "Israel" became a weighty factor in light of Arab media reports that Khalifa Haftar had promised to normalize ties with "Tel Aviv" if he was to win the election.
The Israeli newspaper also said Haftar sent his son Saddam on a secret visit to "Israel" for talks with senior officials in the country about a possible declaration of a relationship between the two parties in exchange for "support on rehabilitating Libya."
Diplomatic sources informed the Israeli newspaper that Haftar received Israeli aid through Egyptian mediation carried out by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
The Israeli daily also revealed that the leaders in Tripoli are seriously considering pushing for talks with "Tel Aviv" through diplomatic relations to use that card against their political opponents.
Prime Minister Dbeibeh told Maariv in Paris the decision of establishing ties with "Israel" must be taken by the Libyan people after the December 29 elections.
Dbeibeh said establishing ties with "Israel" would be discussed at a later time, although he did not completely rule out that possibility, the newspaper reported.
Israeli media reported a few days ago that Saddam Haftar conveyed a message on behalf of his father, in which he asked for Israeli political and military assistance in exchange for establishing Libyan-Israeli relations in the future.
