Libyan Election Commission Backs From Rejecting Gaddafi Candidacy
The High Electoral Commission in Libya backs from rejecting the candidacy of Seif Al-Islam Gaddafi despite his ICC conviction.
The Libyan Election Commission said Monday it backed from its decision to reject Seif Al-Islam's candidacy for the upcoming presidential elections.
Election Commission Chief Imad al-Sayeh said Monday the Commission decided to reject Gaddafi's candidacy due to the repercussions his candidacy caused.
"Seif Al-Islam Gaddafi submitted... his candidacy for the presidential election to the High National Electoral Commission office in the city of Sebha," the Commission said Sunday in a statement.
Gaddafi is still wanted by the International Criminal Court, and its spokesperson asserted that there still was an arrest warrant in force for Gaddafi, "and that has not changed."
There are serious ongoing steps in Libya toward reaching a compromise over the election planned for December as part of a peace process, Libyan Presidency Council Head Mohamed al-Menfi told Reuters.
"We must be optimistic and think the elections will be on time with the agreement of Libyans," he told the agency in an interview.
