A flashback

Alexander Lukashenko has secured a seventh five-year term as the president of Belarus following a decisive victory in January's election.

Lukashenko received 86.8% of the vote, according to the official results released by the country's electoral commission.

“You can congratulate the Republic of Belarus, we have elected a president,” said Igor Karpenko, the commission’s head, during a press conference.

The electoral commission reported a voter turnout of 85.7%, with 6.9 million eligible voters. An earlier exit poll aired on state television had projected Lukashenko would win 87.6% of the vote.
