Major General Rasool to Al-Mayadeen: We Identified Drone Launch Point
Following the failed assassination bid against Iraq's PM Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, Iraqi Major General reveals to Al Mayadeen that the drone was not within the range of the US embassy’s radar systems in the Green Zone.
A spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Major General Yahya Rasool said that the failed assassination bid against Iraq's PM Mustafa Al-Kadhimi was carried out by an armed drone in Baghdad at dawn.
In an exclusive interview for Al Mayadeen, Rasool affirmed that "the drone took off from the southeast of the capital, Baghdad", stressing that "it was not within the range of the US embassy’s radar systems in the Green Zone.”
The top Iraqi major added that “the Intelligence Agencies are working to bring the perpetrators of the act to justice," noting that "the operation involves the management of the entire intelligence effort.”
“When we identify the side which outlined the plan to assassinate the Iraqi PM, we will announce it to the public”, he affirmed.
Rasool vowed that "the armed forces are fully prepared to defend Iraq and its institutions."
Failed assassination attempt
The Iraqi prime minister's residence was attacked in the early hours of Sunday. Later, al-Kadhimi tweeted that he was fine.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi said he was unhurt and appealed for "calm and restraint" after a drone attack on his residence in Baghdad's Green Zone early Sunday, amid political tensions mounting in the country.
"I'm doing fine, praise be to God, and I call for calm and restraint on the part of everyone for the good of Iraq," al-Kadhimi wrote on Twitter, after what his office called a "failed assassination attempt."
