Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced she will not attend the upcoming Summit of the Americas in the Dominican Republic, condemning the exclusion of Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela from the event.
The 10th Summit of the Americas is scheduled for December 4–5 in Punta Cana, a major resort city in the Dominican Republic. Earlier this month, the host country stated that Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela would not be invited to the regional gathering of heads of state.
"I will not be going. We are assessing whether someone from the Foreign Ministry can do this," Sheinbaum said during a press conference at the National Palace.
"Personally, first of all, I would never agree with barring any country. Furthermore, in the current circumstances, we need to focus on the country and, in particular, this emergency," she added.
The president explained that she is currently overseeing the government's response to a natural disaster that has devastated central Mexico. Heavy rains triggered floods and landslides, leaving at least 64 dead and 65 still missing. Sheinbaum emphasized that national priorities must come before international appearances.
