His brother Mohammad Farhat, was the first to ascend in a feda'i operation in 2002, before which their mother bade him farewell in front of cameras. Mohammad Farhat's feda'i operation killed 9 IOF soldiers in the Atzmona settlement.
His brother Nidal, regarded as the founder of al-Qassam's rocket program, was the second to be martyred among Um Nidal's sons.
The third martyred brother was Wissam Farhat, also known as Abu Hussein Farhat, the commander of al-Qassam Shuja’iya Battalion. Back in December 2023, al-Qassam Brigades dedicated an operation, the targeting of a Merkava, to him.
The fourth martyred brother is Rawad Farhat, the youngest of the family.
With Mo'men’s martyrdom, Um Nidal has now sacrificed five sons in the path of the Palestinian resistance.
Who was Um Nidal Farhat?
Born Mariam Muhaissen a year after the Nakba to a modest family in Gaza City’s Shuja’iya neighborhood, Um Nidal excelled in her studies before marrying and raising six sons and four daughters.
In 2006, she was elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council as part of the Change and Reform bloc, the political wing of Hamas in the Palestinian Legislative Council. Following her victory, she carried out political and Resistance work, continuing her lifelong struggle for the full rights of the Palestinian people.
She also chaired the Bright Candles Association for Orphans of Martyrs. Her home was not only a refuge for children of martyrs but also once sheltered al-Qassam commander martyr Imad Aqel.
In November 1993, her home was stormed by more than 200 Israeli soldiers who assassinated Aqel inside.
Her house was bombed four times. When the Gaza government offered to rebuild it, she refused until her neighbors’ homes were also rebuilt.
In her final years, she suffered from severe liver fibrosis and intestinal inflammation. She passed away on March 17, 2013, at al-Shifa Hospital and was buried in the Martyrs’ Cemetery east of Gaza City, alongside the graves of her sons, in a massive funeral attended by thousands, including senior Hamas leaders.
