Moldovans divided in half on country's possible accession to EU: Poll
A recent survey by social and political science research company Intellect group shows Moldovans divided almost equally over the country's possible accession to the European Union.
Moldovans are almost equally divided over the country's possible accession to the European Union, as some believe Moldova will join the bloc, while others deny this possibility, according to a recent survey by social and political science research company Intellect group.
According to the poll, around 45.9% of respondents believe Moldova could become part of the EU in the future, with 27.2% thinking it "will probably happen," and 18.7% that "it will definitely happen."
Around 47.2% of respondents do not believe in EU integration, the poll showed, specifying that 16.5% categorically denied such a possibility.
As for those who failed to answer the question, they were around 6.9% of Moldovans.
1,209 respondents from 82 urban and rural settlements in Moldova took part in the poll conducted between December 1 and 20 with a margin of error not exceeding 2.9%.
On June 23, European Union leaders agreed to grant both Ukraine and Moldova the EU candidacy status in a show of support from the EU as part of their positions in the proxy war taking place in Ukraine.
Both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his Moldovan counterpart Maia Sandu reportedly welcomed the announcement.
In October, Moldova held the first meeting of the EU integration commission. They discussed the need for reforms and called for forming 35 working groups to make local legislation correspond to European standards before joining the bloc.
