New Government Formed in Morocco
Morocco's King announces the designation of a new government, wherein he kept the foreign and interior ministers and appointed Nadia Fattah al-Alawi as Finance Minister.
Morocco's King Mohammad VI announced on Thursday the formation of a new government after last month's elections, wherein he kept the foreign and interior ministers in their posts and appointed Nadia Fattah al-Alawi as Finance Minister.
The main mission of the new government will be to implement a developmental model laid out by the royal palace that plans to limit inequality and poverty and nurtures opportunities for development.
Following his appointment as Prime Minister after his liberal party, the National Rally of Independents, came in first in the elections, Aziz Akhannouch formed an inclusive government that also grouped the liberal Authenticity and Modernity Party and the conservative Independence Party.
The three parties have a cozy majority in Parliament, with 270 MPs, while only 198 are needed to pass legislation.
The new Finance Minister, Nadia al-Alawi, who was Tourism Minister in the previous government, is one of 7 women in the government, including Marrakesh's Mayor, Fatima Zahra Mansouri.
Local sources reported that the King hosted the new government in his palace. He is set to make a speech from his palace, due to Coronavirus restrictions, addressing the new parliament.
Morocco's King had designated Akhannouch to form the government on September 10, with the latter announcing he will form a three-party government on the 22nd: the National Rally of Independents (102 seats in parliament), the Authenticity and Modernity Party (86 seats), and the Independence Party (81 seats).
