New X tool exposes foreign origins of prominent MAGA accounts
A new transparency feature on X has revealed that many high-profile MAGA accounts posing as Americans are actually run from countries across Europe, Africa, and Asia.

A recently introduced transparency feature on X has triggered a wave of revelations about prominent pro-MAGA accounts operating far from the United States, despite presenting themselves as voices of US nationalism.
The tool, titled 'about this account', was activated late last week and allows users to view an account’s registered location, date of creation, frequency of username changes, and how the app was originally installed. Within hours of the rollout, users began identifying major right-wing profiles that had long portrayed themselves as US-based activists but were in fact managed abroad.
Liberal commentator Harry Sisson celebrated the findings, writing: "This is easily one of the greatest days on this platform… Seeing all of these MAGA accounts get exposed as foreign actors trying to destroy the United States is a complete vindication of Democrats, like myself and many on here, who have been warning about this."

Among the accounts drawing attention was MAGANationX, a profile boasting nearly 400,000 followers. Despite branding itself as a patriotic channel with the tagline 'Patriot Voice for We The People', reporting from the Daily Beast indicates the operator is located in Eastern Europe. Another widely followed account, IvankaNews, a page dedicated to Ivanka Trump with close to one million followers, appears to be based in Nigeria.

Additional examples emerged over the weekend. A smaller profile known as Dark Maga, with roughly 15,000 followers, turned out to be run from Thailand. MAGA Scope, which has gathered more than 51,000 followers, also operates out of Nigeria, while MAGA Beacon is reportedly located somewhere in South Asia.
Foreign identity unmasked
Reddit users joined the effort, sharing screenshots of accounts whose stated identities did not match their detected locations. One commenter posted an image of a woman claiming to reside in Texas but appearing instead to be linked to Russia. By Sunday, the account’s visible location had shifted to the United States. Other commenters compiled similar examples.
The findings renew longstanding concerns about coordinated misinformation efforts on the platform. Twitter had already struggled with bot networks and influence operations before Elon Musk’s acquisition in 2022. Since its rebranding as X, critics argue that moderation has weakened, while the platform’s AI assistant, Grok, has been observed promoting false or misleading claims.
The transparency tool now appears to be giving users new means to scrutinize political accounts whose real origins had stayed hidden for years.
