Two NYPD officers and a suspect were involved in a shooting incident while police were responding to a domestic disturbance call in Harlem, New York.
The officer who was killed was identified as 22-year-old Jason Rivera, who joined the force in November 2020, and the wounded officer as Wilbert Mora, 27, who’s been with the NYPD for four years.
The suspect was wounded as a third officer who responded to the scene shot him in the head and arm as he was trying to flee.
Commenting on the incident, Mayor Eric Adams, a former police captain himself, described the attack on the police officers as "an attack on the city of New York.”
Adams called for federal authorities to do more to round up stolen guns like the one used in Friday’s shooting inside a Harlem apartment.
“There are no gun manufacturers in New York City,” he said. “We don’t make guns here. How are we removing thousands of guns off the street and they still find their way into New York City, in the hands of people who are killers?”
The shooting is the third in four days of officers being shot on the job. Tuesday night in the Bronx area, a cop was shot in the leg after a scuffle with a teenager who apparently shot himself. On Staten Island Thursday, a narcotics detective was shot in the leg.
Tonight, we mourn the loss of a hero officer — a son, husband, and friend. Only 22 years old, Police Officer Jason Rivera was murdered in the line of duty. We vow to #NeverForget Jason as his fellow Finest vow to honor his tremendous legacy of service & the ultimate sacrifice. pic.twitter.com/5zsx45XiM4

In September 2019, Brian Mulkeen, the latest NYPD officer killed in the line of duty was shot wrestling with an armed suspect after following and firing at him in the Bronx.
