North scorched by Hezbollah's rocket, drone launches: Haaretz
The Israeli newspaper says the fires in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights and the al-Jalil region resulting from Hezbollah's launches are significant events.
These are difficult and confusing times in the North [of the Israeli occupation entity], as since October 8, rockets and drones launched by Hezbollah have been raining down from Lebanon, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on Tuesday.
The newspaper pointed out that the fires in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights and the al-Jalil region resulting from Hezbollah's launches are significant events.
According to the report, in 2022, 25,000 dunams (6,250 acres) burned in the Golan, and 5,000 dunams (1,250 acres) burned in al-Jalil over the course of the year.
In just over six months of 2024, the report emphasized that 110,000 dunams (27,500 acres) in the Golan and 50,000 dunams (12,500 acres) in al-Jalil have been set ablaze. Half of the burned area is in nature reserves, while the other half is in open spaces.
Haaretz highlighted that across the Israeli occupation entity, 113,000 dunams (28,250 acres) burned in 2022, while in the first seven months of 2024, 280,000 dunams (70,000 acres) burned.
The Israeli newspaper described the map of the burned areas, marked in red, in the Golan and al-Jalil as "a horrifying picture. A bright red mosaic."
In August, the Israeli newspaper Maariv highlighted that forest resources in the North [of the Israeli occupation entity] saw unprecedented and extensive damage as a result of Hezbollah’s attacks since the Lebanese Resistance group commenced on October 8, 2023, its military operations against Israeli targets in support of Gaza and its Resistance.
The area of burned land has increased by more than 200% since the beginning of the year compared to previous fires, surpassing the damage caused in the 2006 July War and the Carmel fire in 2010, according to data from the Israel Nature and Parks Authority.
An Israeli environmental scientist working with the authority told Maariv that "Israel" has never seen such fires before.
