Tens of thousands of protesters dressed in red flooded the streets of The Hague, demanding that the Dutch government take more decisive action against the "genocide" in Gaza during a large-scale demonstration on Sunday.
The demonstration, organized by rights groups including Amnesty International and Oxfam, saw protesters march through the city toward the International Court of Justice, forming what they called a "red line" in protest.
According to Oxfam Novib, one of the organizing groups, approximately 150,000 people joined the march, though Dutch authorities typically refrain from providing crowd size estimates at demonstrations.
Holding banners that read "Don't look away, do something," "Stop Dutch complicity," and "Be silent when kids sleep, not when they die," protesters called on the Dutch government, which collapsed on June 3 after a far-right party abandoned a fragile coalition, to take stronger action in pressuring Israel over its military offensive in the Palestinian territory.
"More than 150,000 people here dressed in red -- and a clear majority of the Dutch population -- just want concrete sanctions to stop the genocide in Gaza," director of Oxfam Novib, Michiel Servaes, said according to AFP, adding that they demand immediate action from the Dutch government.
Dodo Van Der Sluis, a 67-year-old pensioner, told AFP, "It has to stop. Enough is enough. I can't take it anymore," while explaining "I'm here because I think it's maybe the only thing you can do now as a Dutch citizen, but it's something you have to do."
Organizers reported that a previous protest in The Hague on May 18 had attracted over 100,000 participants, which they characterized as the largest demonstration in the Netherlands in two decades.
Dutch PM responds to protesters
Prime Minister Dick Schoof acknowledged the demonstrators in The Hague through a social media post, stating that the government recognized their presence and shared their ultimate objective of urgently stopping the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
