Pezeshkian, al-Sudani discuss Syria, regional issues
In a phone call, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani discussed several regional issues, including the ongoing terrorist attacks in Syria.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani held a phone call on Sunday to discuss the latest regional developments, particularly the situation in Syria.
During the call, President Pezeshkian emphasized Iran's readiness to cooperate in addressing terrorist activities in Syria and ensuring regional security. He expressed concern over the recent events in Syria, stating, "The recent developments in Syria have raised serious concerns about the region's security."
The Iranian president stressed the importance of unity among Islamic countries, saying, "There is a necessity for alignment and cooperation among Islamic nations to prevent the spread of terrorist ideologies in the region."
Prime Minister al-Sudani echoed these sentiments, describing the recent terrorist activities in Syria as "part of the Zionist entity's attempts to divide Syria." He affirmed Iraq's commitment to fostering regional collaboration, noting, "We are working through ongoing communication with regional leaders to establish a platform for joint efforts in combating terrorism."
Earlier on Sunday, President Pezeshkian, speaking during a public session of the Iranian Parliament, expressed hope that Islamic nations would cooperate to resolve the crisis in Syria and prevent the United States and the Israeli occupation from exploiting the situation.
"I hope that this problem that has arisen in Syria will be resolved with the help of Islamic countries, and Muslim countries will not allow conflicts within countries to become a basis for further foreign intervention in the region," he stated.
Iran commuted to peace
The President reiterated Iran's commitment to peace, criticizing nations that claim to uphold human rights while perpetuating war and bloodshed. Referring to the Israeli ongoing aggression on Gaza, Pezeshkian said, “For me, as a human being, regardless of my position, it is unimaginable that a regime would allow itself to drop multi-ton bombs on women, children, and defenseless civilians in hospitals and schools.”
Meanwhile, al-Sudani, speaking with Jordanian King Abdullah II, underlined the importance of coordinated regional efforts, reiterating Iraq’s commitment to supporting joint Arab and international initiatives aimed at addressing regional challenges.
"Security and stability in Syria are of critical importance not only to Iraq but to all countries in the region” and called for urgent action to “halt the Zionist aggression and the ongoing acts of genocide against the resilient Palestinian people," he stressed.
The Syrian army affirmed its commitment to continue its operations against terrorist organizations, vowing to expel them and restore state control over all areas of Aleppo and its countryside. This announcement follows a large-scale assault launched by armed groups, supported by thousands of foreign fighters, heavy weaponry, and numerous drones, targeting multiple fronts in Aleppo and Idlib.
