Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held a phone conversation on Tuesday to discuss the advancement of bilateral cooperation under the framework of the Russia-Iran strategic partnership agreement, the Kremlin announced.
The Russia-Iran Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty, signed on January 17, 2025, by Presidents Vladimir Putin and Masoud Pezeshkian, is a 20-year agreement aimed at deepening cooperation across multiple sectors, including defense, energy, and trade.
The treaty outlines plans for joint military exercises, collaboration on oil and gas projects, and peaceful nuclear energy initiatives. It also emphasizes mutual support against external sanctions and the development of independent financial systems. This partnership reflects both nations' efforts to strengthen ties amid shared geopolitical challenges and Western sanctions.
“The issues of further development of Russian-Iranian cooperation based on the Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries were discussed in detail,” the Kremlin stated. “Particular attention was paid to the expansion of mutually beneficial trade and investment ties, including through the implementation of major joint projects in the field of transport and energy.”
Both sides signaled their intent to intensify practical cooperation and enhance coordination in foreign policy, amid increasing alignment on regional and international issues.

Putin offers condolences over Shahid Rajaee port explosion
President Putin conveyed his condolences to Pezeshkian for the loss of life resulting from the April 26 explosion at the Shahid Rajaee port in southern Iran. The Iranian president, in turn, thanked Putin for Russia’s assistance in managing the aftermath of the incident.
The April 26 explosion tore through Iran's largest commercial port, leaving more than 50 people dead and a thousand injured, according to state media. The explosion occurred near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a waterway that handles around 20% of global oil shipments.
Pezeshkian also extended congratulations to the Russian people and armed forces on the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, highlighting the historical significance of the date.
The Kremlin concluded that both presidents agreed to strengthen the Russia-Iran partnership, maintaining momentum in their strategic dialogue and joint initiatives across political, economic, and regional fronts.
