The meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Moscow was constructive, practical, and highly useful, Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov stated after the talks, which lasted at least 5 hours.
According to Ushakov, Moscow received four more documents alongside the 28-point plan initially put forth by the United States for a potential settlement in Ukraine.
Russia has stated that while specific formulations were not discussed, the talks focused on the essence of the US proposal. Ushakov also noted that Russia agrees with some of the US proposals but finds others unacceptable.
During the talks, both sides agreed not to disclose the full contents of the discussions, reaffirmed their commitment to continued contacts at the level of aides and foreign ministry representatives, and emphasized that Moscow and Washington must show a real desire for economic cooperation.
“Not moved away from peace, that’s for sure,” Ushakov said, suggesting a continued diplomatic path.
Possibility of Putin-Trump meeting linked to progress
Ushakov noted that the possibility of a future meeting between President Putin and Donald Trump depends on tangible progress in resolving the Ukraine conflict.
“Parties to Putin-Witkoff talks announced readiness to continue joint work,” he added. Putin also reportedly conveyed greetings and political signals to Trump through Witkoff.
Economic cooperation also on the agenda
Putin and the envoys discussed broad prospects for economic cooperation between Russia and the US, underlining potential areas for collaboration despite current tensions.
“At the meeting between Putin and Witkoff, it was emphasized that Moscow and Washington need to demonstrate real desire for economic cooperation,” Ushakov said.
Trump: Ukraine talks going 'well' in Florida
Separately, US President Donald Trump had confirmed ongoing talks between American and Ukrainian delegations in Florida, describing the negotiations as “going along well.” The discussions are part of a broader diplomatic push by Washington to broker a potential agreement on the Ukrainian crisis.
"There's a good chance we could make a deal," Trump told reporters, adding that the talks were showing promising signs.
However, Trump acknowledged persistent challenges, particularly with corruption in Ukraine. "Ukraine’s got some difficult little problems… the corruption situation going, which is not helpful," he said.
The discussions reportedly included sensitive issues such as Ukraine’s future election schedule and a potential territorial swap with Russia, according to a report published by The Wall Street Journal, citing a senior White House official.
The reported discussions between Washington and Kiev involve the possibility of a territorial exchange between Ukraine and Russia, though no specific regions were named. The talks also include setting a timeline for national elections in Ukraine, postponed due to the ongoing conflict and martial law.
