Russian President Vladimir Putin has officially ratified a strategic partnership agreement with Iran, marking a significant step in bolstering bilateral relations across multiple sectors. The ratification was confirmed on Monday through a decree published on Russia’s legal information portal.

Deepening Russia-Iran ties

The agreement, signed on January 17 during the visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Moscow, outlines a comprehensive roadmap for enhanced cooperation between the two nations.

According to the text, both parties commit to deepening and expanding collaboration in various areas of mutual interest. This includes strengthened coordination in the fields of security and defense, as well as unified action at the regional and global levels.

The accord is characterized as a long-term, comprehensive, and strategic partnership, reflecting a shared intent to reinforce geopolitical alignment and counterbalance Western influence in key regions. The agreement also signals continued efforts by both nations to align positions on international issues, from regional security to global diplomacy.

Details of the agreement

During the talks in January, the leaders negotiated the prospects of expanding bilateral cooperation and regional and international issues.

After the signing ceremony, Pezeshkian described the agreement as a pivotal moment in the relationship between the two countries. "Today's major agreement that was signed will open a new big chapter in our relations, especially in terms of trade and economic relations between Iran and Russia," he stated.

The Iranian president also noted that the talks included discussions on financial and investment matters, as well as the possibility of introducing a visa-free regime.

"As for customs issues, as for banking and monetary issues, as well as our investment projects, as well as the visa-free regime between our countries - we discussed these issues, and within the framework of this agreement, we will have the opportunity to discuss these topics in the future," Pezeshkian added.

Putin said that the agreement would provide a framework for long-term stability and progress, adding that "This truly breakthrough document aims to create the necessary conditions for the stable and sustainable development of Russia and Iran, as well as our entire common Eurasian region."

Araghchi praises close ties

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi praised the deepening ties between Tehran and Moscow during a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday, highlighting Russia's constructive role in nuclear negotiations and regional stability.

Araghchi described the progress in Iran-Russia relations as "very good" and welcomed Moscow's strong presence on both the regional and international stages. He also delivered a personal letter from Iranian Leader Sayyed Ali Khamenei to President Vladimir Putin, which he said addressed multiple areas of cooperation and current geopolitical issues.

Strategic partnership, nuclear issue

During the press briefing, Araghchi expressed satisfaction with Russia's position on the Iran nuclear agreement, referring to the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries as highly significant.

Lavrov, for his part, reaffirmed Russia's readiness to facilitate negotiations between Iran and the United States, saying Moscow supports any "objective and mutually acceptable agreements" concerning Iran's nuclear program.

"We welcome the desire to reach balanced and mutually acceptable agreements between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States," Lavrov said. "Russia is prepared to support and assist this process in ways that respect Iran's legitimate interests."

Lavrov also warned that efforts to burden the nuclear negotiations with unrelated issues would be risky and counterproductive.
