Republican Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee has called for New York City mayoral candidate and state assemblyman Zohran Mamdani to be denaturalized and deported, accusing him, without evidence, of supporting terrorism.
Zohran Mamdani's win in the democratic primaries has shocked the United States, as his momentum continues to remain unmatched, forcing his rival, Andrew Cuomo, to concede while the final results are still pending, Bloomberg reported on Thursday.
Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist recognized for his strong criticism of the Israeli occupation and his push for economic justice reforms, won 44% of votes in the race against Cuomo’s 36%, the Associated Press reported.
Mamdani's rapid political rise sent shockwaves through the establishment of the world's financial capital as he proposed ambitious policies, including wealth taxes on millionaires and corporations to fund sweeping social programs such as free public transportation, universal childcare subsidies, and government-imposed rent stabilization measures.
A democratic socialist born in Uganda to Indian parents and a U.S. citizen since 2018, he has faced a wave of racist and Islamophobic attacks from right-wing figures following his victory over Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary.
On X, Ogles referred to Mamdani as “little muhammad,” calling him an antisemitic, socialist, communist" and claimed he would “destroy New York.” He also released a letter to the DOJ, urging an investigation into whether Mamdani’s citizenship should be revoked over alleged ties to terrorism.
These accusations stem from Mamdani’s vocal criticism of "Israel’s" war on Gaza. In a recent primary debate, Mamdani declined to name a foreign country he would visit as mayor, saying he would instead focus on New Yorkers, while Cuomo pledged to visit "Israel."
Mamdani has affirmed during debates and public remarks that Israel "has the right to exist" as a state with equal rights, but emphasized that his focus as mayor would be addressing the needs of New Yorkers.
Despite this, Mamdani he has come under heavy attacks following his victory. Republicans, including Donald Trump and his administration, have seized on Mamdani’s candidacy to push their anti-immigration agenda, framing his rise as a consequence of what they call unchecked migration.
Mamdani 'radical threat' to NYC
Stephen Miller, Trump’s top policy adviser, claimed Mamdani’s win was "the clearest warning yet" of a society failing to control its borders. Meanwhile, far-right activist Laura Loomer accused Mamdani, without evidence, of terrorist ties, warning that his election could lead to "9/11 2.0."
The backlash intensified with Rep. Andy Ogles’ call for Mamdani’s denaturalization and deportation. His letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi was echoed by the New York Young Republicans Club, which urged Trump to use the Communist Control Act to revoke Mamdani’s citizenship, calling him a “radical” threat to the city. The group publicly appealed to Miller and Trump’s former border chief, Tom Homan, demanding swift action.
In his victory speech Tuesday, Mamdani acknowledged the barrage of attacks he faced, saying, “This has been a historically contentious race, one that has filled our airwaves with millions in smears and slander.” He added, "now that this primary has come to an end, I can introduce myself once more. Not as you've seen me in a 30-second ad or in a mailer in your mailbox, but as how I will lead as your mayor."
Former President Donald Trump also weighed in, slamming Mamdani on Truth Social as “a 100% Communist Lunatic” and claiming his win proves Democrats have “crossed the line.” Trump took the attacks a step further by describing Mamdani as "terrible, his voice is grating, he's not very smart, he's got AOC+3, ."
