According to a Russian reconnaissance team head, the team destroyed a German-supplied Leopard tank of the Ukrainian military with a crew made up of Bundeswehr troops in the Zaporizhzhia direction on Saturday, RIA Novosti reported.

The team's head described how the team destroyed the Leopard tank and "moved out to the burned vehicle hoping to seize the 'tongue'," when the driver-mechanic appeared to be badly injured and others were dead.

The mechanic began screaming 'Nicht schiessen' ["do not shoot" in German]," according to the head of the team.

While receiving medical help, the German named his brigade along with its dislocation site, as he repeatedly claimed he was not a mercenary but a "Bundeswehr serviceman, and that he and the rest of the crew were members of the same unit of the German army."

Despite obtaining first aid, the tank's driver perished from his injuries minutes after being discovered, according to the Russian team head.

The Russian fighter detailed how the doctor had expressed the German had minutes left. The man "responded saying that he loved his child and wife very much and that he regretted agreeing to come here. We started preparing him for evacuation, but he blacked out and passed in a few minutes."

In early September, Brigadier General Christian Freuding expressed that Germany is prepared to support Ukraine for the next decade, even if the conflict with Russia drags on, adding that Germany is committed to helping Ukraine regain all the annexed territories it lost to Russia.

At the Yalta European Strategy (YES) forum, when asked if Germany was prepared to support Ukraine if the war with Russia became a long-term conflict, Freuding said that it was unrealistic to expect the conflict to end soon.

He went on to say that Germany "got the support of our parliament… for our military support for our Ukrainian friends up to the year 2032."

Freuding stressed that Berlin is working to "accelerate" and "better coordinate" its support for Ukraine, with the goal of ensuring a Ukrainian victory.
