Russia Senses Affinity Between Iran, Arab Countries
Russia ambassador to Iran says Russia is not overreacting to the situation in the Sea of Oman following a series of incidents with merchant ships.
Russian Ambassador to Iran, Levan Dzhagaryan, announced in an interview for Sputnik on Monday that his country is not overreacting to the situation in the Gulf of Oman, following a series of incidents with merchant ships in the marine area. The world power is confident neither Iran nor the Arab countries in the region are interested in further escalation.
"There are tensions indeed, especially following the tanker incidents in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, but I would not be dramatic and say that the situation is more acute now than during previous crises. Neither Iran nor its Arab neighbors are interested in further escalation," Dzhagaryan said.
Additionally, according to the ambassador, Russia believes that relations between Iran and Arab counties in the Gulf are becoming warmer.
He also noted that the United Arab Emirates sent a delegation to Tehran to participate in the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, adding that Iran and Saudi Arabia launched direct contacts.
"Russia welcomes dialogue in this strategically important region. This is one of the goals of our concept for collective security in the Gulf, which we are promoting," he declared.
On July 29, Mercer Street, a ship operated by an Israeli company, Eyal Ofer's Zodiac Group, was attacked in the Gulf of Oman, which left two of its staff dead - Romanian and British nationals.
The United States, the United Kingdom, and "Israel" accused Iran of being behind this attack, while Iran completely denied all allegations.
At the time, at least four tankers off the United Arab Emirates coast issued a warning about losing control of the ships; this, according to the Associated Press, raised tensions in the Gulf of Oman, which is one of the world's most important routes for exporting crude oil via tankers.
