Russian Diplomat: Ukraine Joining NATO is Unacceptable
Russia responds to the newly signed US-Ukraine strategic charter confirming US support for Ukraine's aims to join NATO.
Russian Ambassador in the United States, Anatoly Antonov, stated that any ambitions to make Ukraine a NATO member are considered unacceptable.
A new US-Ukrainian strategic charter was signed during a working visit to Washington by a Ukrainian team, which contains a provision confirming US support for Kyiv's aspirations to join NATO.
"Almost in every line, we can see that the Charter is geared against Russia geopolitically. Any ambitions to see Kyiv becoming a member of NATO are unacceptable," Antonov said in a statement distributed by the Russian embassy on Thursday.
US Arms Sale to Kyiv
The statement highlighted the Russian ambassador's belief that following negotiations between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, Washington's plans to supply weapons to Kyiv will only aggravate the situation in Ukraine's south-east.
"Plans to deliver weapons to the Kyiv regime will only worsen the situation in the southeast of Ukraine. In our opinion, another opportunity to make Kyiv stop the war has been lost," Antonov said.
On Wednesday, Kuleba and other members of a Ukrainian delegation paid a working visit to Washington.
The visit concluded with a new US-Ukrainian strategic partnership charter. Blinken subsequently vowed that "We’ll work with Congress for making sure that we continue to provide security assistance that Ukraine needs, including lethal defensive weapons."
