Russian manufacturer to supply engines for El Dabaa NPP in Egypt
Transmashholding, in cooperation with Rosatom, will take part in the construction of the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant following a memorandum signed in 2022.
Chief Executive Officer at Transmashholding (TMH), Kirill Lipa, confirmed to Sputnik, that TMH will supply engines for the nuclear power plant under construction in El Dabaa, Egypt.
The largest manufacturer of locomotives and rail equipment in Russia, TMH, according to the CEO, has been developing cooperation in Africa alongside Rosatom, the Russian state nuclear corporation, following the memorandum signed in 2022.
Lipa explained that both TMH and Rosatom "share the same countries of foreign presence with Rosatom, in terms of their stations and our rolling stock - these are Turkey, Hungary, Egypt and others. Just the other day, a rather significant event took place - we began to implement a contract for the supply of engines manufactured by Kolomensky Zavod for the Egyptian nuclear power plant in El-Dabaa."
The CEO further added that deliveries are expected in 2025-2027 and that there is also the possibility of attracting local suppliers for the project.
One of the crucial phases of building Egypt's El Dabaa nuclear power plant, namely laying the foundation plate for the turbine unit, is slated to begin in October 2023 according to a Rosatom source cited by Sputnik, and Russia will participate in the construction.
The El Dabaa nuclear power plant project, located around 320 kilometers northwest of Cairo, began after contracts were signed on December 11, 2017.
The plant will consist of four VVER-1200 units, similar to those already in service at Russia's Leningrad and Novovoronezh nuclear power stations, as well as Belarus' Ostrovets nuclear power plant.
Rosatom will not only build the plant but will also supply Russian nuclear fuel for the duration of its operation, according to the agreement.
They will also help Egypt with personnel training and plant maintenance for the first ten years of operation. Rosatom has also been hired to construct a specific storage facility and supply containers for old nuclear fuel.
It is also worth noting that Cairo and Moscow reached a deal in 2015 to work together to build El Dabaa, Egypt's first nuclear power plant. The activation of commercial contracts for the building of the plant was also covered by an appendix to the agreement that the two nations signed in December 2017.
