Sadrist Movement leader halts all political activities of the party
Muqtada al-Sadr announces his decision to halt all political activities due to his inability to resolve issues of 'corruption and injustice' within the party.
The leader of the Iraqi Sadrist Movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, announced on Friday morning that the party would halt all political activities for one year, excluding those related to the Cultural Committee and Friday prayers.
Al-Sadr said in a tweet that his inability to achieve reforms within the Movement goes at odds with his promises to reform the Iraqi system.
The leader revealed that his party harbors “corrupt” and “unjust” individuals, whom he could no longer tolerate.
The Iraqi politician allegedly took this step in order to acquit himself of inner party corruption.
Furthermore, Al-Sadr decided to deactivate his Twitter account until further notice.

It is worth noting that in August 2022, the figurehead announced his retirement from politics after his supporters hijacked governmental institutions and the presidential palace located in the Green Zone, Baghdad. Clashes ensued that killed and injured dozens before the leader asked his supporters to withdraw from the area.
Extreme decisions have been a main feature of al-Sadr’s practices. In February 2014 he announced his withdrawal from Iraqi politics, the dissolution of the party, his withdrawal from its parliamentary bloc, and the closure of every Sadrist movement office in the country.
