Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, today, Friday, stressed the need to "find a real outlook to resolve the Palestinian issue within the framework of the two-state solution," which he deemed as "the only way to achieve just and perpetual peace."
He continued, "undermining the two-state solution will only lead to 'one state' as the outcome, and in truth, this will be ugly, as it will sustain an apartheid state."
In a dialogue session during the Rome Mediterranean Dialogues 2021, Safadi warned of the "impossibility of the continuation of the status quo, as political vision is absent and economic challenges facing the Palestinian people and the Palestinian Authority are exacerbated."
"Maintaining calm, which Jordan has put effort to achieve with the cooperation of partners and friends, requires not only avoiding illegal Israeli measures that blew up the situation this year, but also practical steps to find a political vision that re-launches negotiations to achieve just peace," he said.
The Minister stressed the need to find an economic vision that helps Palestinians, affirming that an "economic vision cannot substitute for a political solution based on the two-state solution," calling on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to provide finances, indicating that the financial deficit will contribute to dangers, as vital services, including education, will no longer be available for more than 560,000 students.
Syria and Lebanon
Answering a question, Safadi said that Jordan's "priorities also include reaching a political solution to the Syrian crisis, and there will be a collective Arab role to achieve the solution, preserve Syria's unity, restore its security, rid it of terrorism, and create conditions for the voluntary and safe return of refugees."
Safadi also spoke of the need to protect Lebanon, the state and the people, pointing out that "protecting Lebanon requires effort from within and assistance from outside."
Anti-normalization protests in Jordan
It is worth noting that mass protests broke out in Jordan on Friday, in front of the Husseini Mosque in downtown Amman, organized by the Popular Movement for Change, in opposition to the declaration of intent signed this week by Jordan, “Israel”, and the United Arab Emirates – with the United States as a sponsor that will allow Jordan to trade its solar power for desalinized water from the Israeli occupation entity.
The protesters chanted slogans such as “enemy gas is occupation" and “down with the Wadi Araba agreement."
On her account, the Secretary-General of the Jordanian People's Democratic Party Abla Abu Elbah told Al Mayadeen that “normalization agreements harm Jordan’s sovereignty”, stressing that the "protests will not stop."
