Serena Williams wins over Kovinic, goes to second rounds of US Open
Serena Williams, a tennis star, maintains her 21-0 legacy in US Open's first rounds as she wins against Danka Kovinic of Montenegro 6-3, 6-3 and goes to the second rounds in her last ever US Open since she announced she will retire afterward.
As part of her farewell event, Serena Williams defeated Danka Kovinic of Montenegro 6-3, 6-3, to go to the second round of the US Open.
The star-studded spectators inside Arthur Ashe Stadium could have watched Williams' final match as a professional but instead, the 23-time Grand Slam winner gave what was debatably her finest performance in 2022.
The six-time US Open winner is currently 21-0 in first-round contests and hasn't lost a set at that level of the competition since 2001.
Following the match, Williams said, while still on-court, that "I've always got to do just the best that I can. I feel so comfortable on this court and with everyone here. When I step on the court I just want to do my best that I can do on that particular day. That's really all I can do. The crowd was crazy. It really helped pull me through."
The tennis star further added that "It's been such a hard decision because when you're passionate about something and you love something so much it's always hard to walk away. I've been trying to decide for a little while what to do. I love it because it keeps you fit so that's a bonus!"
Williams, however, concluded by stating that "I felt now is time [to retire]. I have a family. There's other chapters in life. I call it the evolution."
Following her post-match interview, the audience constructed a vibrant tifo to declare "We love Serena" just before Williams could leave the court.
