A suicide car bombing targeted a school bus in southwestern Pakistan on Monday, killing at least four children and injuring dozens more. The attack occurred in the Khuzdar district of Balochistan, a province long plagued by separatist violence and instability.
The explosion occurred as the school bus was transporting children to a military-run school in the city.
According to Deputy Commissioner Yasir Iqbal, the bombing caused widespread casualties, with several children listed in critical condition, raising concerns that the death toll may rise further. Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the attack, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of young lives.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the Khuzdar bombing, however, Balochistan has been the epicenter of a long-running insurgency, where various separatist groups, including the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) have carried out attacks against government targets and security forces.
The Balochistan suicide attack underscores the region’s volatile security situation and the persistent threat posed to civilians, including children.
Pakistan accuses India as tensions resurface
In the wake of the attack, the Pakistani government accused India of involvement by backing the BLA, linking the bombing to heightened tensions following the recent Pahalgam massacre in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
New Delhi has denied any role in the attack.
As the investigation continues, the Khuzdar bombing adds to a growing list of attacks that highlight the vulnerability of civilians, especially in conflict-prone regions like Balochistan.
The two countries are under a fragile ceasefire after the tit-for-tat attacks that took place after a terror attack that killed tourists in Pahalgam, in Indian-controlled Kashmir. That said, India and Pakistan have reportedly agreed to withdraw the military reinforcements deployed during their recent confrontation with a phased return to pre-conflict positions expected by the end of May.
