Switzerland reopens embassy in Baghdad after 33 years
The Swiss embassy shut down in 1991 owing to the Gulf War.
Switzerland has reopened its embassy in Baghdad, which shut down in 1991 owing to the Gulf War, according to the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday,
"As of today, Switzerland once again has a diplomatic presence in Iraq. The previous embassy was closed in 1991 due to the Gulf War. The Federal Council aims to strengthen bilateral relations with Iraq and deepen cooperation in economic, security and migration matters," the statement read.
The Swiss government has long acknowledged Iraq's regional importance, according to the department.
The reopening of the diplomatic post is part of the European nation's 2021-2024 Middle East and North Africa plan, which was established in 2020.
The Swiss embassy in Jordan has been in charge of ties with Iraq since 2012.
