The Syrian authorities announced, on Friday, the killing of an ISIS leader in an operation launched by the Syrian security services in the countryside of the Daraa governorate, southwestern Syria.

The official news agency, SANA, quoted a Syrian security source who stated that "the security services carried out a security operation in the town of Muzayrib in the northwestern side of the Daraa countryside."

The cited sources added, "The operation resulted in the killing of one of the remaining leaders of the terrorist organization ISIS, Muhammad Ali al-Shaghouri, nicknamed Abu Omar al-Shaghouri, after storming the organization's headquarters next to the primary school in the northern neighborhood of the town of Muzayrib."

The Syrian security services explained via SANA that "al-Shaghouri is responsible for a number of assassinations and attacks that were taking place in the western countryside of Daraa."

The source further confirmed that the operation also resulted in "the killing of al-Shaghouri's companions, Ahmed Khaled al-Masri and Mohsen Zitawi."

Once the security services stormed the ISIS headquarters in the town, the source disclosed, the Syrian security services confronted ISIS terrorists resulting in the killings and confiscation of their individual weapons.

This comes after the Syrian Interior Ministry announced, on January 18, that an officer with the rank of major from the Special Tasks Unit in Damascus was killed, while two policemen from the Special Tasks Unit in Daraa, in addition to 3 civilians, were wounded in an explosive device explosion in Bosra Square in Daraa city. when they pass by.

Earlier, the city of Daraa and its countryside witnessed repeated security incidents, including bombings and assassinations, targeting members of the Syrian Arab Army, security services, and civilians, which constituted a breach of the settlement process reached by the state and armed groups under Russian auspices, in 2021.
