The constitutional court of Thailand on Wednesday suspended Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha from official duties effective today after deciding to hear a petition to review his term limit, which is mandated as eight years-long.
The court announced that it would be taking this action in a written statement handed out to the media. However, it was unclear when it would deliver a final ruling on the petition brought up by the main opposition party.
Prayuth's rise to power came in 2014 when he spearheaded a coup that overthrew the country's democratically-elected government.
Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan is expected to take over as interim leader of the country until a decision is finalized on who will take the post.
