Top IOF lawyer admits troops not prioritizing civilian safety in Gaza
As the Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip continues unabated, Israeli Military Advocate General Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi accuses the army of failing to properly account for the civilian population in Gaza.
Israeli Military Advocate General Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi sent a letter to the Israeli army's Southern Command Chief Maj. Gen. Yaron Finkelman, highlighting that the army had not properly accounted for the civilian population in areas it operated within Gaza.
Tomer-Yerushalmi pointed out what he described as a recent error in the Israeli army’s assessment, which estimated only 3,000 civilians remained in Beit Lahia in northern Gaza, while the actual number was 14,000, according to Army Radio.
This "miscalculation", she argued, has hindered the Israeli army’s ability to accurately gauge the extent of collateral damage from airstrikes on "militant targets". It also resulted in insufficient humanitarian aid being allowed into the region. In response to the letter, Israeli army Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi ordered an internal investigation.
Unsurprisingly, the probe concluded that the Israeli army’s strikes did not lead to an excessive number of civilian casualties and that "adequate aid" had been delivered to Beit Lahiya. However, acknowledging the validity of Tomer-Yerushalmi’s concerns, Halevi instructed that an external panel be formed to further examine the issue.
This comes as reports reveal alarming practices by the Israeli military in Gaza, where civilians face risks from repeated attacks on buildings labeled by "Israel" as Resistance sites, even after those buildings are no longer in use.
Haaretz correspondent Yaniv Kubovich has lately highlighted disturbing policies, including the targeting of civilians entering such structures and a military culture of competition over casualties. These actions have devastating consequences, with attacks on designated humanitarian zones like Mawasi resulting in numerous civilian deaths.
Khan Younis massacre: Over 10 killed as 'Israel' bombs displaced tents
Israeli occupation forces carried out a deadly attack early this morning, marking the 454th day of genocide in Gaza, targeting a tent sheltering forcibly displaced families in the al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis, southern Gaza.
The brutal Israeli airstrike killed at least 11 people, including three children, and left 12 others injured. Among the victims was Major General Mahmoud Salah, the Director General of Gaza's Police Force in the Ministry of Interior.
Concurrently, IOF also intensified its bombardment across central Gaza. Artillery fire struck the northern al-Nuseirat refugee camp, while warships shelled its coastline. Meanwhile, Israeli helicopters launched aerial attacks on the southwestern region of Deir al-Balah.
The escalation has further exacerbated the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with civilian casualties continuing to rise amid relentless attacks and suffocating Israeli blockade.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military has continued its genocide in Gaza, which has resulted in the killing of over 45,550 Palestinians, primarily women and children. This has occurred despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.
In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Security Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the ongoing war on Gaza.
The Israeli entity is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its actions in Gaza.
