US President Donald Trump greeted Argentine President Javier Milei at the White House on Tuesday, and they were set to hold bilateral talks, according to a TV broadcast.
The meeting, which is expected to last about two hours, will focus on building a strategic partnership between the two countries.
During his visit, which coincides with ongoing talks with the US about a $20 billion currency swap for Argentina and a potential buyout of the country's dollar-denominated bonds, and with the meeting is anticipated to result in a new tariff agreement.
Debt and taxes
US President Donald Trump stated that financial aid for Argentina is contingent upon the outcome of the upcoming legislative elections, a result that will determine whether his visiting counterpart, Javier Milei, can pass a series of tough reforms.
"I hear your poll numbers are pretty good, but I think they'll be better after this," Trump said to the right-wing Milei while hosting him at the White House, just days after his administration had promised a $20 billion aid package to prop up the Argentine peso.
"And you know, our approvals are somewhat subject to who wins the election, because if a socialist... wins you feel a lot differently about making an investment," Trump added.
The US president then proceeded to praise Milei, claiming that the Argentinian president has gained a lot of popularity and is on the verge of achieving great economic success. "He [Milei] has become very popular, and he's on the verge of a breakthrough. I think he's really on the verge of tremendous economic success," Trump stated during a bilateral lunch between the two at the White House.
