The lawyer was unable to explain why Jebali had been detained.

"The police arrested Mr. Jebali in his car in Soussa, then took him to Tunis," Zied Taher said.

Taher added that Jebali has been under investigation for more than a month for activities at his boiler factory in Soussa, a coastal city south of the capital.

Mosaique FM, a private radio station, reported that anti-terrorist police had remanded Jebali in custody "on suspicion of money laundering."

It is worth noting that Jebali led Tunisia's government from December 2011 until his resignation in early 2013 in the aftermath of the killing of martyr Chokri Belaid.

In 2014, he quit politics and left Ennahdha party.
